Preventive Healthcare & Healthy Ageing
Discover how optimising your diet, sleep, stress management, and regular exercise are key to optimal health, disease prevention and healthy ageing.
A Proactive Approach to Health & Ageing
Did you know that about 80% of chronic diseases are related to diet and lifestyle?
At Thryve Family Practice, we emphasise the importance of taking a proactive, not reactive, approach to health and encourage our patients to take control of their wellbeing.
The right diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management can prevent most chronic diseases, but we understand this can be overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start, and there is a lot of conflicting information out there. That’s where Thryve comes in.
Our preventative healthcare practitioner, Dr Marina McPherson, is passionate about helping her patients achieve balance and take control of their health so they can age well and live life to the fullest.
It is important to understand that while we can’t make the changes for you, we can help you understand what changes need to be made and support you on your journey.
No matter your age or stage of life, it’s never too late to make positive change. Contact our preventative medicine clinic today and start your journey to a healthier you.
Preventative Checkups & Screenings
Preventing disease and illness often comes down to lifestyle, but beyond this, it’s important to be aware of our bodies and stay informed about what risk factors may be at play. This is why preventative screenings and regular checkups are critical.
Whether you want to reduce pain levels, lose weight, be able to keep up with the kids or prevent the onset of disease, like Diabetes, which may be present in the family, Thryve Family Practice can help. We can discuss and arrange the appropriate referrals for preventative screenings, such as:
Mammograms
Cervical screening tests
Bone density tests
Blood work to check favourable lipid profile, optimal insulin sensitivity, and optimal nutritional levels.
Faecal occult blood tests (FOBT) can be arranged to be done at home. More extensive tests can be organised where appropriate, such as microbiome assessments and comprehensive hormone assessments. Book your preventative checkup at Thryve today.

Preventative Care FAQs
-
At Thryve, we provide preventative healthcare that is individualised to each patient, taking into account their own medical history and family history. This process involves optimisation of your diet, discussion and optimisation of your environment, and addressing any vulnerabilities that you may have; i.e. high blood pressure, early (or late) insulin resistance, high cholesterol, etc.
-
This depends on where you are on your health journey. When someone is well and is just focused on preventative health, once per year may be enough, or once every 2 years if under the age of 40. As we age, checkups may need to be more frequent.
-
The screening tests you should have depends on your age group and risk factors. Some routine screening tests include mammograms, cervical screening tests, faecal occult blood tests (FOBT), bone density tests and blood work to check things such as favourable lipid profile, optimal insulin sensitivity, optimal nutritional levels, etc. More extensive tests are offered where appropriate, i.e. microbiome assessments or comprehensive hormone assessments.

Some diseases, like Huntington’s disease may definitely be inherited. For others, like Diabetes Type 1 or 2, thyroid disease, coeliac disease, and some cancers – you may develop a genetic susceptibility to that disease. That means you have the potential to develop this disease, given the “right triggers”. The triggers may be a virus, significant stress, pregnancy, poor diet, etc. We can help arm you with the tools and information you need to reduce the risk of disease and manage these diseases as best as possible.
-
Yes, absolutely. Proper nutrition and regular movement are the foundations of preventative care. At Thryve, we can guide you on how to optimise your diet and movement to stay fit and healthy.
-
You may have heard the saying "If nothing changes, nothing changes", and the same applies with your health. It is very likely, particularly if your diet and lifestyle are contributing to your genetic vulnerabilities, that you will need to make some changes and adjustments to improve your health and wellbeing.
